change it yourself, there are literally 2 SCREWS all you need is a short screwdriver. THAT'S IT. I did change mine following instructions in link below.

I am installing today

I took the car apart yesterday about 20 min's and basic tools, I am installing as soon as UPS gets here. Pretty easy thanks for the tips, once I see what the part is exactly I am going to pick up a spare, not the whole assembly this time from the dealer but just the 20.00 dollar part and keep a spare. Why would porsche choose a pink plastic part to retain the dash screws??

Update

There are two different switches in the 996, the early 996 has a black switch the newer 996's have a white colored switch I will post the different part numbers when I get a chance.

My heated seats, headlights, air/heat and windshield wipers stopped working, sometimes the key also gets stuck.

Just installed the whole switch assembly ($129 from Suncoast) in about an hour and a half with my two kids (8 and 11) in a confined garage. Really not that difficult. Hardest part was getting the air ducting back together. The pictorial on how to complete was easy enough for my 8 year old son to explain to me.

I will gladly help anyone out who needs a hand or has any questions.

Porsche no longer sells the switch individually, now it comes with the ignition lock housing. Not sure why, but that's what is recommended from the factory.
