Suspension question for my 00 996 cab

Hey guys,

I have a 2000 Seal Grey metallic 996 hard top cab C2; I'm the 2nd owner and it has about 39 k miles but lately the ride has been feeling quite bumpy even at moderate speeds. Granted i live in NY so the roads here are an issue by themselves. My question is i want to upgrade my factory suspension- i'm looking to make my car as comfortable as possible (never tracked the car so im not looking for the stiff competition feel.) Are there any recommendations? I was told by a few people to go with Bilstein sport shocks and compliment them with a good set of springs like H&R? Any advise would be truly appreciated!

Why not just replace the OEM shocks with another set of OEMs? Of the 996's that I test drove, the OEM suspension was softer than I expected. I ended up buying a 996 with the M030 suspension because I wanted slightly stiffer. The roads here are not as bad as yours.

I would think the Bilstein/H&R combination would have to be firmer than the OEM.
What size rims? What kind of tires?

Thanks for your response. I was also thinking keep it stock but after reading so many different threads and receiving advice from my mechanic, I assumed upgrading to an aftermarket would be the way to go. I have Michelin Pilot Sport's and 18 inch BBS 10 spoke wheels (I think they're called the Classic II) I'll upload pictures soon....

I replaced by stock suspension with pss9s (new version of these coilovers are the pss10s). While the 9s are firmer, they actually absorb the bumps more smoothly than stock imo. So not only did I improve the handling, cornering, etc of the car, I got a better ride as well. The pss9s lower the car a minimum of 1" and are adjustable, both ride hide and "stiffness". My stock suspension had less than 20,000 miles on it when I replaced it and was in good working order.

If you are going to replace your suspension, imo I would go with an upgrade ... there are a variety of opinions in other threads as to which other coilovers also work well, or consider the Porsche ROW system. You might consider sways at the same time.

Just my $.02.

if you want comfort stay away from the ROW M030, I replaced my stock suspension with them, and while it improved handling the ride is stiffer, i'm happy with my setup but it doesn't sound like it's for you, You should consider the PSS9/10s cause they have adjustable dampening so you can set it to be as comfortable as you want.

Pss9's at their softest setting sounds like the perfect fit for you... As others have mentioned, they gobble up holes in the road much better than the stock setup while still limiting body roll. Overall they really make the car more enjoyable to drive and since you don't have PASM to worry about, you can still fit the PSS9's and save quite a bit of money.

As a side note, by the time you buy seperate shocks and springs you won't save much if any from buying a complete setup. Good luck.
