Another approach, which I did in my AUdi A4 is to upgrade the HU and add a mono amp and subwoofer, which is what I'm going to do in my 996. It made a night and day difference in the A4 without upgrading the factory component speakers. Using the right crossover frequency to grab all the bass you can from the factory speakers and channel it to the sub allowed the factory speakers to put out the mids and highs which they didn't have trouble with. Of course it should go without saying that you should use a head unit with crossover frequency control and sub output control. I use Alpine.

That is also another advantage of going the "H/U first" route....having the ability to add a subwoofer and to be able to fine tune it accordingly.

I too went the HU and sub upgrade first and eventually upgrading the mids and tweets when funds were available. Good way to go if you want to upgrade without the full upfront expense and who knows you may be happy with just the HU and sub. Good Luck!

Where did you put the sub? I have a 12" sub in a box powered by an Alpine M500. I am going to put the sub in the front, held in place with 4 corner brackets screwed to the floor so I can just lift it out if I need the "trunk". Anyone else put such a big sub in the front?- not mounted permanently somewhere else in the car?

I think subs would sound better inside the car. One option would be to put the sub on the back seat (folded down) and just take it out when you need the space. Some had placed the sub on the rear footwell. You can also do one that is removable.

This is how I did mine. Doesn't really interfere with anything. My wife didn't complain anything about "leg space".

I am looking for the stock head unit

My 996 came with upgraded speakers and HU. I am looking for a stock HU for my 996. If anyone has one to get rid of let me know. I also need the CD magazine holder for the CD player in the trunk. Thanks

I don't want to step out of line regarding the rules for buying/selling. Let's just say that I am going to be replacing my head unit hopefully within a week and I won't need the factory unit any more.

Oh and by the way I am new to the forums and new to p-carville. Only 12 posts thus far, so I know there are rules, etiquette and protocols to follow.

That whole sub enclosure is on the people side of the firewall, right? How is the bass from those 6.5s?

Not sure if you clicked on the link I provided above but you'll find a similar set-up as Jr1966 except the enclosure is a single 8 as opposed to dual 6.5. I also agree subs sound better in the car. My wife also didn't complain about the leg room, only the free ankle massage when I turned the volume up .

Yeah, passenger side footwell. Bass is decent, actually, pretty good. Not for the hip-hop/rap type of bass, but sufficient to provide the needed low end to make the sound good on most music.

Ankle massage? My passengers get calf massage.
