It was called Designing Legends...or if you have digital cable 'Techno Files' and it was a 1 hour spotlight of the Porsche 986/996 and Mercedes S500 design processes.
I can't believe how many factors the engineers design cars around and the ingenius innovations made along the way. It's so easy to pick apart a prototype of the 'new' Porsche [or any other car] when you see it but the development process behind what you're seeing is quite remarkable. It explains why they chose the 996-style headlights, the interior, plus the ENGINE and its various coatings, updates, and efficiencies they designed into the watercooled boxers.
There was even a yellow 968 cabby and pseudo-968 in the show!! They used 968 body panels on the Boxster test car to camouflage its appearance from the public and showed it blasting around a test track. Woohoo..!
The show will be on again tonight as well as various times tomorrow. If you have the Discovery Science Channel I suggest that you record this one and/or watch it...great show! Glad I caught this one as I RARELY even turn on the television, and only to the Science or Travel channel when I do.
