Dude, Dave is right, you have to have coverage. If you can't afford it, why drive a Porsche, if you can, what possible reason is there not to have coverage?
My patients include some of the wealthiest people on the planet, and they ALL have coverage. If you were seriously injured and ended up in an ICU for months, do you have any idea what the bill would be? Millions! I've seen it dozens of times my friend and if you have assets, the hospitals collection attys will come after it, guaranteed. Forget the halogens and get coverage!
I'm not trying to flame you, just analytically look at it and what it could cost you.

Now if you are a multi-millionare then why risk it and just pay the $600 a month so you dont have any chance of losing everything you worked so hard for???

If you cover your auto why would you not cover your body... doesnt make sense.. but at the least he did not get hurt...

Not flaming you.. just friendly advice...
Yep, it makes next to no sense not to at least get the highest deductible policy you can just for catistrophic purposes. Even though I rarely if ever use medical care, I do find it's nice being able to get the insurance company rate which is typically 20 to 40% OF what they'd charge me without it. Sure all charges go to the deductible, but my out of pocket is usually 60% to 80% less than if I didn't have insurance. And, this is not an HMO.

The guys are right (though the way some of them got their messages across wasn't real courtious), you don't want to get caught eating $100Ks or millions in medical bills (or your family) to save a few thousand a year.

All points well made, but I'm tired of subsidizing obese smokers, etc. Accidents & illness can hit anyone at anytime, but at this time I'd rather self insure.

Ben, I've been thinking along the lines of your suggestion and will likely eventually go that route somewhere down the road.

Also, I've got a German passport, so I have other options if the extreme were to occur.

That's an interesting way of looking at things - I have a UK passport but would be scared to be treated by the National Health back there.

Some of my clients are large MCOs here in the US. Self-insurance only makes sense if you are a large company covering a lot of lives. If you're not in that situation, I couldn't remotely see the ROI.

I guess the universal answer is to stay well everyone!

Yep, and I can't imagine that sort of flight if one was in ICU. It would likely cost a couple hundred K just for a medical flight abroad alone. And if it was cancer or something, does that mean one would have to move back to Germany - or fly back and forth a couple times/week?

Clearly, my approach is the wrong one for most people, but it works for me. Since I'm not losing any sleep at night over my decision, I'm happy with it.

(There's more to the story, but we've gone off topic enough...)

Now that I think about it...I do have some supplemental health insurance with my auto policy, so if I get banged up in the car I'm covered to some degree, for what it's worth.

What's the benefit to have medical coverage if you already have health insurance? Health insurance covers you no matter if you are in a car or not so would double coverage be a waste of money?

For the xenon topic, I would definitely get the xenon. You will buy a harness, ballast, light housing which would total up to $1000-1500. Ebay is a good source besides some junk yards (search yellow pages or online). Lights can be pitted by rocks so buying new would be better. Also call Sunset Porsche and other dealers that sell new for less.

No health insurance, so no double coverage. It also covers passengers.

Whoah guys....I was gone for the weekend, and totally missed this huge discussion on medical insurance.

Re: Falling asleep at the wheel....That was really stupid and I've learned my lesson. It was 4am, and I pushed on even though I was really tired. I should have just pulled over and taken a nap. I'm in great shape--work out 5 times a week--it was just a matter of needing some sleep.

Re: not having medical insurance. I suppose I still haven't gotten out of the "I'm invincible" stage of life. Not to mention, I've never been to the hospital for anything in my life, except for one broken arm.

However, you guys make a good point. I could handle most everyday medical bills, but hundreds of thousands or even millions would be the end of me. I'll look into getting a high-deductible policy.

Smart man Steve. I personally know a couple of people who are financially finished as a result of inadequate coverage for themselves or family members. It's just not worth it.

You can always figure you won't get in an accident that requires very expensive bills, but when it happens to you, you'll be so thankful that you have insurance! This applies to other kinds of insurance too. A few years ago I let my renter's insurance lapse for a couple of weeks when I bought the condo I was living in. I figured, what could a couple of weeks hurt, and I was busy with other things. Well, two weeks after I bought the place, the condo next door caught on fire and was a total loss. I had tens of thousands of dollars of damage to my unit, and no insurance.

You always think it'll never happen to you, and then it does!
