Water Pump replacement....ugh!

My mechanic just told me that my water pump is starting to go, I have 30,000 miles on my car. Quick questions:

1. Is this semi normal? If so, is there any preventative maintenance that can be done?

2. He quoted me about $340 for the pump and three hours of labor. Does this sound about right or am I getting hosed?

Thanks!!!

If you are handy you can change it yourself. I changed mine a few months ago,it's a ***** getting it in and out but worth it saving a labor charge. There is a great DIY on renntech.org . Also Suncoast Porsche has the pump for $225.00 with the gasket.

You can get an OEM pump for less than $200, sometimes as little at $100. Search Ebay, in particular Deutchepartsusa.

There are 20 or more listed right now. Remember you will need a new gasket if one is not included. You might want to consider one with a metal impeller, the stock one has a plastic impeller and these tend to wear/break faster.

I got mine on line in a Porsche box for about $100.

That's a great price for OEM's. Just make sure you get the metal impellers.
3 hours labor is about right. Only at 30k? I don't think that's normal but if it indeed is leaking, get it replaced. My boxster's totally failed around 75k and 911 was fine over 100k but just replaced it just for the heck of it.
