Mobil1 15w/50

I have a 2000 C2 cab, and in the manual it states full synthetic 15w/50 as an approved oil above 50 degrees. I have located 15w/50 Mobil1 and am planning on using it for my next oil change. It seems it would be superior to lighter weights (especially 0w/40) for protection of the IMS bearing, as well as harder to leak past the trouble prone RMS. Am I correct, or has Porsche rescinded this recommendation for the MY 2000 Carrera? Thanks for the help.

I have 2000 986 and moved from 15-50 to 0-40 and so far so good, I believe the 0-40 is getting the better results overall.

For 996TT 5-50 is the concensus for less chain noice.

Frissen, did you have any problems with the 15w/50? Did you notice any noise from the lifters? How was your oil pressure? Why did you decide to go to the much lighter viscosity oil?

Mother, thanks for the input. You are using the 15w/50 Mobil1 in what year and model pcar? Any concern or items of note that you have to report such as start-up lifter noise, abnormally high oil pressure when cold, etc.? Thanks for the help.

I have a 2000 996 and I get a little lifter noise on initial start-up for few seconds and oil pressures are probably higher then normal for a block of driving or so, however being in the SW with high temps I feel the benefits are a plus when temps are high most of the time. With lower viscosity oil and higher temps I hear the tappets more because it is just to thin after car is warmed up and being used at operating temps. It's all a trade off I suppose.

0w40 in the winter and 15w50 in the summer. I have always run this combo in my porsches from 944s and 928s to 996s and 997s.

Thanks all for the input. Cannonball996, I see you have a couple Aprilla 250 listed. I used to roadrace for Yamaha on TZ250 W and A models back about 20 years ago. Lots of fun. In your 996, are you using 15w/50 wt. Mobil1? No lifter noise related concerns, or abnormally high oil pressures?

So is it safe to say that 0w-40 is better for the winter and 15w-50 is better for the summmer ?

I have tried both 0-40 and 15-50. I noted increased lifter noise on start-up with 15-50. I looked all over Oklahoma for mobil 5-50, none to be found here. I have now started using Castrol Syntec 5-50 and so far so good.
996 With second engine, no official records but I estimate about 60k miles on this engine. Total mileage is 126+.

i saw the latest porsche approved list and it looks like they did resind what is listed in the manual. At temps above 50 they recommend 0 or 5w for the cold viscosity and under 50, 0w. The warm viscosity can be either 40 or 50.
