How do you drive your car?

My "new" 996 is obviously alot different than my old 5 speed. If you're going say 65-70 on the highway (10 miles on interstate to work), whats better for the car? Leaving it a tad above 3k in 5th or going to 6th. i know someone who used to own a 993, and he said that the cars like to be driven around 3k. Saving gas isnt really a concern for me..rather keep the engine happy. Any other quirks that you guys have picked up would be awesome too.

I'll use 6'th while crusing at 50-60 and above. No problem with 6'th as long as you do not need to accelerate, go up steep hills or similar.

I guess a new PDK equipped 997 would use 7'th during similar driving conditions.

The 3k running speed started with 356's that needed higher fan rpm's to keep cool. Although it wasn't as necessary, it tended to get carried over to air cooled 911's -- especially early on when mechanical fuel injection wasn't all that precise and you'd "load up" your plugs.

Today's engines have such precise fuel metering, good cooling and run on such clean fuels, that as long as you don't lug the engine, it will be fine. "Italian tune-ups" do more for drivers these days than they do for the engines.

Your Owner's Manual has Porsche recommended shift points... you should use those if you don't feel the sweet spots... I would hope that after you drive your car for awhile these will become second nature to you...

Enjoy your car!!!
