Question on buying first Porsche

Would you spend $16 - 17,500 on a 2002 996 with 98K miles with the following repair performed 5K miles ago?
Overhaul engine: valve job on both heads, ultrasonic parts, clean injectors, blue print and bench test, update repair secondary shaft for slippage of large gear, test vacuum, system and pressure smoke test for air leaks in intake system. Rear main seal was addressed at 50K miles. New main bearings, rod bearings, auxialry shaft, new water pump, oil separator, new gaskets.

PPI came back clean but was performed by the mechanic who had worked on the car for the last 5 years. Top engine rebuild has warrany until February. Fidelity quoted me $2400 for their powertrain plus package (5 yrs 100K miles). Mechanic said she should be solid for the next 100K miles.

A 2002 with 48K miles recently sold for $23K in my area. A mechanic in my area is skeptical of the purchase given the history of the engine.

Get a clean car if you can afford it IMHO. Get as few miles as you can find/afford. And if you can find someone with access to Manheim reports, you can get the comps on what these cars sell for.
