My 2002 shift **** and boot has not held-up well. The "aluminum" horseshoe and silver **** have held-up terrible, so I am replacing it.
So, my question is what is holding the **** on and where are the clips holding the boot on? I do not want to break or crack anything just pulling it off.

On my 2001 the **** is just friction fit i.e. it just slides right off when you pull up on it. The boot is just clipped on around the edge and just pops off like most of the other Porsche clip-on parts.

 

Be careful not to hit yourself in the face. Becareful not to break the rearview mirror off. I have read people have done both. I read a that a guy used two screwdrivers to help pull. He laid the shafts of the screwdrivers on either side of the base of the shift ****. This gave him better leverage.

Unclip the boot (you can pry it out with your fingernails or a screwdriver) and pull the **** assembly off. Like the other guys say it's a friction fit...but really tight. You can give yourself a black eye (and I know this is true!)

 

I have an 01 TT and mine has a hex bolt holding the shift **** on. There are 2 zip ties holding the leather boot to the shift lever - cut to remove. When you pry up the silver horseshoe, make sure you pry from the absolute bottom - closest to the console (there are 4 clips holding it down to the console.). It is possible to pry the silver trim off while everything else stays down so make sure you are lower than that.

Just pulled off the old. Turns out there is a set screw holding it on. See photos. Are most of the replacement ones just pressure fit on?

True True, but I thought you were describing an Audi TT & didn't realize they were the same when it came to this trim part.

Just put the new **** on and it was pressure fit versus a set screw.
