2000 996. Help a noob purchase and audio upgrade!
You could have trouble using the stock amp with an aftermarket head unit - If there is a security code required when you disconnect the battery, changes are very good that it will NOT work. I wasn't able to get mine to work so I had to bypass the stock AMP. The new head unit had a built-in AMP that was as good as the stock one, so I have not replaced the AMP at all.
Removal of the stock unit and CD player is very easy.

i upgraded my sound system with Cargraphic Stainless Steel Sport Catalytic Set (Cats)
200 Cells, OBD2 compliant, 3.6L/3.8L +7KW (10 PS) / +10Nm. sounds great, especially at >5k rpm.

So far ive removed the old stereo, removed the cd rack, removed the hi-fi unit.
I then moved the ac down, and installed a storage tray .

Now on to the difficult part, installing a new double din unit!

Lifeguard, what is the total harmonic distortion on that setup? Do you have any idea how many ohms it is running at?
You can check out the in pelican parts but their price is very high. You should be able to get it < 1k now if you check with suncoast. Here's the link to pelican http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/...ec996_pg13.htm

The system includes an upgraded amp with thicker battery wiring. All mid/tweeter are upgraded with built in crossover and weights much more than the original. There are 2 6 1/2" woofers hiding in each of the molded door panel with mesh grill with yet another crossover built in. So you are looking at a total of 12 speakers - 4 tweeter, 4 mid and 4 woofers. Hope this helps.
I have one High Performance Audio kit, but without the amplifier. Anyone interested? It comes with the door pods with four sub woofers, and upgraded dash speakers. The dash speakers look cool, built in cross over and serious magnet for such a small component speaker. These pieces are expensive still, but they're REALLY nice. PM me if you're interested.

Sorry for this thread hijack. I noticed there was little mention about the dash speakers. In doing some googling, I came across this Youtube tutorial on how to replace the dash speakers since the mounting bracket is proprietary (it's for the 986 but should be applicable for the 996 too) :-

The replacement seems to be the Alpine SPG10C2. However this Youtube is over a year old and wondering since then if there's more recent models with less "customisation". If not, I'm going out to order these Alpines.
Hopefully the door and rear speakers aren't as proprietary as the dash.

I am in the processes right now of installing a double din in my 2004 c4s right now. The whole interior is all torn apart right now. It is complicating. I am also doing a reverse camera and let me tell you to fish those wires through the engine bay was a real pain in the a**. The overall install isn't that bad. Its just really time consuming. You could have the whole job done in like 5 hours if you rush it. I am taking my time and making sure everything keeps it's stock look. I started at 1030 this morning and I just got home at 10 tonight. All I have left is to hook up the deck wires and place the deck in and re route the heat/ac controls.
If you going to do it than I suggest you get everything you need right off the bat. I bought the Kenwood DNX7160 indash double din $876, Kenwood reverse camera $220, Alpine 5 channel amp $399 (was originally 599, my friend hooked me up at our local custom shop). Power wire, Ground, Remote wire, RCA wires $120 (You can get this cheaper, I just wanted the best for better sound quality). Dash Install kit $165 (optional $15 RCA wire plug that takes out any bad sound from your car. I suggest it on these cars.) The dash kit you can find on Ebay. The people you get the deck from wont have a kit. They are custom made. What you will pay for install I don't know cause I am doing it all myself.
Do your research before purchasing. I spent a month reading posts on installs and what screens were good and what wasn't. Kenwood or Poineer are the two best on the market right now. Check out sonicelectronicx.com for a screen. They have awesome deals. Also, you will see a lot of people have used the Jlaudio amp during their install. JL is a great company, I have used a lot of there products in the past. But, the cleanest sound comes from Alpine. The new Alpine pdx-5 is what I put in my car and it sounds amazing!!!!! Just search and choose what you think will be the best for your needs. If your budgeting the job I would say put most the money into the double din because if you skimp on that than you will end up with a system that was really no better than the stock deck you had. A lot of the cheaper screens have poor navi service and the bluetooth is all fuzzy and crapy etc.
