Back in the fold
Back in the fold
Told myself I would never own another Porsche after my Boxster S motor exploded. But two years later, the whine of that flat six passing by has me thinking about it again. Thinking about a 996.
Found one with a new factory motor and clutch (15k), 5k on "new suspension", 80k on the car. A bit weathered but I can live with it. A few questions, what is the next shoe to drop with a 996? How many miles before the cats go out? Transmissions on my older 911's were bulletproof, assume the same for a 996. Any other big ticket items I should be looking at?
Also, this is the first 996 I have been in. Shocked by how little leg room there was. The older 911's had a lot more. The seat in my old SC could be set so far back I could barely engage the clutch. Then I noticed the seat in the 996, all the way back, did not come close to touching the rear seat. In the old cars, it would press against the rear seat cushion.
Is there a simple fix to this? Removing a stop in the seat rails maybe? Otherwise, swapping or repositioning the seat ralis?
Thanks

The 996 tranny is not bulletproof... it is a failure point and there is a 2nd gear detent upgrade one can do to prevent the 2nd gear failure.
I have Euro GT3 seats and leg room isn't an issue. I'm 5'11"

Wow, thanks. Never would have guessed the was an issue with a 911 transmission.
Altho, I will guarantee you, the seating position is cramped in a 996 compared to the earlier 911's. I am 6'3" and the old 911's were fantastic. This is as bad as a Boxster. Still, with all that distance to the rear seat cushion, I have to think there is a fix. Surprised no one has replied.

Can anyone tell me whether the back of the front seat will touch the rear seat cushion when moved all the way back? The 996 I am looking at has mechanical seat rails.
Has anyone removed stops or otherwise altered the seats to get more room in front?

as for seats, try installing GT3 delete. it removes the center console below the dash board giving your right leg more room. kinda like the older 911s.
as for the cats, one of mine gave way at 80500 mi. cute.
clutches can go at any time.
i have had alot of trouble with the dash board switches. i have replaced several of them.
good news, it is fairly easy to work on.
