If I buy a 996 with a new motor....

will I have to worry about the IMS failing again?

Most of the new motors have the latest factory ims bearing and seal. Will it last?, start putting the mileage on and see.

When was the "new" motor installed? I learned the last updated IMS bearing was done in 2006. This is good and bad. Good because it is the strongest IMS bearing. Bad because you cannot upgrade it to the nice LN Engineering kit without tearing down the block. You can pull out the older ones with the LN tool for an easy upgrade.

The lack of the ability to upgrade the bearing on the later engines is the greatest challenge IMHO. Yes the updated bearings seem to have a better record (if only Porsche would share the statistics) but there are many cases of failure. However a new engine has a lot of other new parts to it that are nice.

Yes the IMS issue is probably overblown, just as the intermix/cracked head problem (which I had by the way) is overblown. But they do happen and probably more than they should. You hear about them because those of us who have had a problem are the ones who post the most frequently. Not may are posting about how their IMS did not fail, or their head did not crack. And mechanics and shops are dealing with broken cars more often than the one that don't break (other than routine maintenance).

All in all if the car has a "new" Porsche OEM engine with few miles on it, or even a warranty on it. that is better than an old engine with a lot of miles on it.

I think its a good time to upgrade the IMS if you were gonna do a clutch job. Peace of mind ?
