Spare key question

If I buy a used 996 key off ebay and just change the key blade to a new blank blade can I program the remote (at the dealer) or does the remote need to have a special code?

Thanks

You should be able to program it as far as I know from talking to the dealer

Thanks everyone! I think i'll just try and find a new one with the code. Generally how much does a dealer charge to program/cut a key?

As I understand it, ONLY a dealer can program the code.

That is on top of the key blank, key head remote, and cutting the key.

When I bought my C4S last summer, the car only came with one master key. The dealer sent me a new cut key with an unprogrammed remote head (out of state P dealer). My local Porsche dealer charged $84 to program the remote.

Hey everyone, so I bought a HAA key blade off ebay from this company that cuts your key from a picture that you sent them. I sent them the picture and they cut the key and mailed me the blade and I have it here. ($20 shipped) The key blade looks identical but I would like to test it, and I have a few questions:

1) Can i swap the new key blade into my original remote or will this somehow effect the already programmed remote?

2) Alternatively, can i put the key into one of the locks on the car and see if it works?

I have read that the car can block you out if you try and use a key that has not been programmed in the ignition, but is this the same with the door locks?

Thanks for your help, once I test the key I will post the ebay seller I bought from!

Need to order a remote from Suncoast to go with the blade soon!

The "code" that is required for ignition is on a little transponder inside the key fob. You can test your new key by unlocking the door manually with it. It will not start the car unless the transponder is present.

I bought a 2000 C2 and it came with a spare key that had never been programmed for my car. I told the dealer that it wasn't programmed and they told me to just bring it in and they'll do it. So I'm pretty sure any key can be programmed.

This is correct. You can see if it will turn the ignition though. It just wont start. Now if you how the old key fob close to the ignition and use the new key it should start up.
