chip the car?
chip the car?
Anyone who has installed a chip or knows of this process care to elaborate? Is it worth the price for the fun factor return? Is there even a fun factor... I know very little about putting a chip in a NA 996. I installed one in my F-250 crew cab diesel, tremendous gains... just tossing this around in my head... thanks
I have to say on the 3.4L you can actually get some impressive gains... I've Flashed at least 20 or so 3.4Ls this past couple of months and everyone has been really happy. With an intake and exhaust you can get another 40hp or so....
Oh Gentleman I beg to differ...............
The proper software with a intake and exhaust will yield a increase in both horsepower and torque.. I have used GIAC "Flash Software" for numerous (30+)clients vehicles and have had a good response.
People seem to be jaded by the fact that a 996TT can see 70 or more HP from a software" chip" upgrade and the normally aspirated 996 car wont..
The biggest improvement that I find with my clients cars is the overall driveability and throttle response is most noticeable....
You arent going to feel a 5-10% increase in power seat of the pants.........
So dont dis-credit or dismiss any sort of software "chip" upgrade.
Just choose your provider wisely, Depending where you are there are a few reputable vendors on this board who can help you ...I would strongly recommend GIAC based on personal experiance.
Every little built helps...............
If you need more info PM me..

Does anyone have before and after dyno figures? If someone could show me a 40 hp increase from a before and after dyno with chip, intake and exhaust, i'd buy.....but from what I have heard and readt 15 hp is more like the number from those mods, and for a few grand, 15hp is not a good return....but PLEASE prove me wrong!!!

40 hp is very Optimistic.........( Not saying it cant happen maybe im just tooo conservitive
)...... But a good exhaust ,intake and software is good for a real 25+ or so Hp...
Alot of this will depend on the car.. I have personally scene as high as 35hp on a car with 100 cell cats. exhaust , software and intake..This was on 100 0ctane fuel..
The power is out there.......
And you really cant look at just the peak horsepower numbers when doing this you need to look at the overall driveability.. Throttle response etc..
If you want cruise by the shop sometime and I will most likely have our 996 NA car there and you can take it for a drive....
Or send me a PM if you need to chat abit more........
Whatever you decide to do a chip will help///.... Or you could ust trade the 996 for a twin and then do the software and see the 75+ hp like the rest of us
............................
Good luck

Had a stage ll software upgrade with exhaust on my BMW ///M Roadster and there was a very noticeable difference you could feel big time. Chips do work but, not worth it on the 3.6L NA Porsche. To bad too from what I've read.
BTW I just added a set of B&B headers and can definitely attest to their claims which they post 15/15 and give the power through a very broad range of rpm mid to high of course. I also do have mufflers and bmc intake but whatever on that. My car has never pulled like it does now. I also got the headers for 500 bucks, so I am happy. I would tend to believe that the giac would be noticeable but it really depends on the person. I am very sensitive and notice extremely small things where someone would not so...
Do the chip on the 3.4L, you will feel the difference.
Do not waste the $$ on the 3.6L as even with headers you will get maybe 8-14hp or so.
The dealers cannot tell if it has been reflashed only if the ECU has been out of the car.
Problem is with reflash that it increases the range 2 revs as downshifting with higher rev limit will increase range 2 hits which can affect warranty work.
Range 1 hits are on upshifts and usually don't affect the warranty
Only use a reflash if it raises rev limit 100-200 rpm.
The 3.4 and 3.6 bottom ends won't take sustained high rpm use beyond factory rpm limit over extended periods.
