Smile doncapecod in the PCA Newsletter

Just received "The Newsletter of the Everglades Region, Porsche Club of America"

I had the pleasure of meeting Don at one of my events up north and seeing him again at the Naples Porsche event. I wanted to share with you a wonderful, touching story that Don and his wife Cindy shared in the newsletter.
Please read below:

The Newsletter of the Everglades Region, Porsche Club of America
April, 2005

LIFESTYLE CHANGES
By DON & CINDY WATSON
Cindy and I have been PCA members since
1983, and during those years we’ve owned a
few (sic) Porsches. Our first was a 1979 Guards
Red 924 that I surprised her with on Valentine’s
Day a long time ago. Since then we’ve owned:
a 1977 Polar Silver 911S; a 1990 White C2 Cab
(hers); a 1994 Polar Silver Speedster (mine, and
my favorite); a 1998 Dark Blue 993 Carrera S
Coupe (for both of us); and currently a 2002
Arctic Silver 996 C4 Cab.
During those years we’ve also moved a few
times. We lived in Westfield, MA and were
members of the Connecticut Valley Region; in
Baltimore with the Potomac Region; in
Philadelphia with the Reisentoter Region; in
Seattle with the Pac Northwest Region, and
finally retiring in Yarmouth Port, MA, on Cape
Cod Bay, transferring once again, this time to
the Northeast Region. During these lifestyle
changes…moving; changing jobs; bringing up 3
children; we could always count on members of
the various Regions to welcome us and be very
helpful in networking in a new area.
Our current 911 (we still like to call them by their
real names) is a 2002 Arctic Silver C4 Cab with
a Met Blue full leather interior, carbon fiber
wheel, shift ****, brake handle and door sills,
and a Carrera aerokit. We added TT front and
rear bumper covers, the necessary low
restriction muffler, and plenty of Arctic Silver
interior pieces.
But I’m getting ahead of myself. On March 1,
2001, I had a stroke which left me almost
completely blind. That, with complications put
me in Mass General Hospital for more than a
month. I literally had to learn how to walk again.
Nothing is simple. My vision allows me to see a
few words at a time on the monitor or TV. With
appropriate software and the fact that I’m a
touch typist coupled with a dose of patience I
can use my computer.
Knowing my driving days were over we talked
and decided to go ahead with the order for the
new Porsche. I would just move over one seat
and become the passenger, and Cindy would
move up from navigator to official driver. This
was to be our first brand new Porsche, and we
had been dreaming of choosing our own colors
and options. We ordered early in September
2001 turning in the 993 and Cindy’s 90 Cab.
The 996 arrived on a foggy day in January and
because of my lack of eyesight, our emotions at
the time, and the fog we named her MISTY.
Early in 2004 Cindy and our son flew down to
Naples and after much research, bought a home
in Fiddler’s Creek. We had MISTY shipped
down last winter and had a great time furnishing
the house and becoming acquainted with a new
area. And again, the folks in the Everglades
Region welcomed us as “honored visitors” from
the North.
Well, the story is not quite over. The doctor has
pronounced me stable (Cindy said “for the first
time”). I feel like the luckiest man in the world. I
had wonderful care in the hospital (it is a very
different world there), but more importantly
Cindy has stepped up to the plate without
missing a beat. Ironically, her 97 year old mother
has macular degeneration, so Cindy is also her
care giver when we’re on the Cape.
Ok, now for the last and best part. Since Cindy
loved her 90 C2 Cab, I have bought her a 91 C2
Cab, black with 29,000 original miles. That will
stay here while MISTY stays on the Cape. We
decided to name the black Cab CINFUL but she
won’t have a vanity plate. She does have
IndyCindy and CINFUL decals in subtle places.
After 47 years of marriage Cindy is still a very
caring wife, mother and lover, all jobs she does
very well. She is a registered artist on the Cape,
and when we’re in Naples she is a volunteer
tutor at the Manatee Elementary School. We
haven’t got her on the track yet, but you never
know._
Like all in our generation, we’re taking one day
at a time and Naples is the place to take it in the
winter! In the meantime, if you see a black Cab
with a beautiful blonde driving and a guy with a
white stick and dark glasses, you can now put
faces with names.
