I think it was Bimmer Magazine that did a comparison of the e92 M3 when it came out against a non S 997 of the same year, and the 997 still had better track times despite its considerable horsepower disadvantage. An 996 C4S has only 20 or so fewer hp than a non S 997, so it should be pretty close. Straight line, not so much.

He said a non-S. A C4S and a 997 base carrera would be close i bet, probably an edge to the 997 b/c of RWD and a little power.

How about an X51 996 Carrera ie: 40th Anniversary car vs. an e9x M3??
