Does anyone have experience with this conversion? I am struggling with how it's done.

if you're good with tools, especially with a drill & lots of time..then its very do-able..it took me several trial & error but I manage to make it fit..
or you can go the easier way & get the one from ebay..note that the ad mention..."The standard mirrors only have to be removed and put on again on your 997 Style exterior rear view mirror."
