Whoa...50 PSI - Thats way too high.
Make sure that you measure the tyre pressures when the tyres are cold (ie. before driving off). I think the rears should be around the 42 PSI mark and the fronts around 38 PSI - have a look in the instruction manual as it specifies cold tyre pressures.
Yes you may run 17's with no problems and then you can drop tyre sizes as recommended/dictated by the rim size.
When mentioning tyre sizes - I assume you are referring to tyre diameter and not tyre width?
Make sure you use a half decent tyre guage to measure the pressure.
Note also regarding tyre widths - Keep in mind that you can have an effect on handling ie. Larger fronts more oversteer - Larger rears more understeer etc
