I have had cops behind me on a daily bases and since I tinted my taillights (2 years) never had an issue... until recently.
I have now gotten 3 tickets in as many months for my taillights and even my side markers ($165,- per).
The taillight OK... but the markers
Regardless, I've decided not to wait any longer for the Rottech led's to come out, kinda looks like this is not going to happen
at least not anytime soon. https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...tyle-poll.html
So I'm going to change the tinting on my taillight exposing enough of the red lens not to get hassled.
Which one of the 3 options do you guys like best...
Also, should I stay with blacked-out brake light or go back to red?
Thanks guys!
Sid.

how are you doing these tints?
are you foiling the taillights with black , looks good...how do you do the cutout of patterns? apply the foil and cut out shape with x-acto knife? but that would score the plastic of the lens, this could be done with headlights too... except for the scoring of the lens plastic...what is the secret here? i like it...
Thanks guys!
Listen if you've got any other design suggestions lets hear em, always open to alternatives.
To kkswow12, the tint is done by masking out the clear and using VH nite shade (spray) plus a couple of coats of clear.
I'll try to find a post with detailed description of how I did these and get back to ya.
Cheers!
Sid.
Oh BTW you guys ever heard of anyone getting a ticket for clear side markers (pumpkins)?

I have mine tinted as well - like your first picture. I left the backup alone (because when it was tinted, I couldn't see in the dark), but I lightened up the tint on the red part enough that you can tell the lens is red while still maintaining the sinister dark look. Cops here haven't given it a second look. It's another alternative to the choices you are suggesting.
Personally, I think if you are going to expose the red on the taillights, you should add the reflector again (for the unique 996 C4S look
)
But out of the three you posted, I agree with Fly and MkC2 on what looks best, because does not dilute the shape & form of the taillights.
On another note: Have you thought about simply reducing the intensity of the tint? (Edit: Nevermind, didn't read the last two posts...)

thankks sid , would like to know more, the clear backups will never be any good as they are, too flat/grey or something like that, they need that sparkly led look as the new suggested replacements ,ah, suggest...
a bit late to the party but #2 as others have said.
#1 looks like it's going through an Aston Martin identity crisis.
#3 ruins the lines of the original taillights and tries to be something different which it isn't
Also keep in mind that only a very small portion has to show red. That is the loophole in this whole thing. If you've ever seen the aftermarket clear lense for some cars that have the dot rating, they were able to get it passed because they had a very small 1x2" red poking out somewhere in the tailight. Of course the more red you have, the less chance of you being hassled by the cops in the future.
Anyways #2 is my ahole for the day.

Have you checked the laws. The cops might be wrong. Most regulations deal with the "emitted" light, not the color of the lens. I'd hate to see you mess with that gorgeous machine if it's not necessary.
Yeah I've been there in certain suburbs where the crime rate is low and the cops don't have anything better to do but to target people for stupid things to generate income for the city and eventually for their salary/bonuses. I know I'm generalizing a bit but this does go on in various places.
If it makes you feel any better, I've had cops tail me for a few miles looking for stuff they can pull me over on. It becomes to a point where they are more or less intimidating and harrassing rather than "protecting and serving" the public.
As for taillights, do whatever you think looks good for you. You've gotten this far and have done a wonderful job of modding your ride.
As for the laws, you might want to double check but I think you need to have some sort of red reflector in the back. It doesn't necessarily have to be on the taillights but it has to be somewhere in the rear like built into the bumpers. If you notice US cars that come with clear or tinted lights from the factory usually have supplemental red reflectors in the bumpers or other parts of the trunk area.
