Vibration in 2000 911 C4
Hi guys. This is my first post on here. Im dealing on a risky car that is 500 miles away. 2000 C4 with 46000 kms. ( 28000 miles). Im told the car has a vibration and a small oil leak. I am waiting to find out more and take it to the local Poeshe dealer but thought I would see if anybody has any ideas. They are thinking the vibration is internal and thought it might be a bad crank? Ive never heard of a crank bending but I am by no means an expert. The car is priced VERY reasonably so I am fine with some major repairs but I dont want to replace an engine. Im not sure where the oil leak is yet but will find out more. Any ideas what could cause the vibration. I wont buy it until I get it checked over but just thought Id see if this is a common issue with them. Any ideas?
Thanks.
Thanks.
My question would be how did they determine the vibration was coming from the crankshaft. Did they measure lateral and axial play on the crankshaft ends?
A vibration could be caused by any number of things including bad variocam actuators, bad dual mass flywheel, intake manifold leak, slight miss or misfire on a cylinder due to bad spark/fuel/contamination, etc. etc etc. The repair bills for the above can be anywhere from inexpensive to approaching the cars value for engine replacement.
If this is the car you want, I would a reputable shop do a PPI. If they confirm major internal repairs are required, I would walk away from the car. If the estimated repair bills are major, even if you decide to have the engine torn down and rebuilt you are looking at the cost of a replacement engine.
Still though, I would question the diagnosis of a bent crankshaft without more information.
