Thinking of going from 997 C4S to 996 C4S

Hey guys....I am new to this forum....have spent the past year in the 997 forum. I am still on the fence but it looks like I will be trading in my 09 C4S with PDK for a Fisker Karma which I expect to arrive March (I have a whole thread in the 997 Forum on this dilemma). However, I can't imagine life without a 911 in my stable and a car to do DEs with. So I am thinking of picking up 996 C4S that is a stick. So far I seem to favor 2002 but I would like the advice of you all when it comes to the best 996 and the best year I should consider. THoughts? Also, would love to hear your thoughts on the differences in 996 vs 997.

Thanks in advance!

i dont think there is change between the years of the c4s, but i could be wrong

i love the look of the 996 c4s cause of the rear light and the fat ***,

997 c4s *** is just boring, its missing something

i have an 03 c4s black on black and i absolutly love it, but im looking at a 6gt3 to replace with

Really....I wouldn't go as far as saying the 7c4s is boring....the 997.2's have the reflective strip as well and the wide ***. But I agree with you love that wide ***.

i have a 02 C4S, and i absolutely love that car. The C4S has the same wide body as the turbo. I love the rear of the car, is very impresive.
If you are looking for one, make sure you get one with an IMS upgraded.
I am spending a lot of money right now getting mine fixed with actuator and IMS upgrade.

Yeah...definitely something I am worried about. My 09 does not have IMS issue. How much is it to upgrade....was it KN that I should upgrade with?

Get a 2004/5, the later years where basically trouble free... yes that includes the whole overblown IMS/RMS

997 has newer technology and with the 3.8 engine is faster than the 996 but only the 997.2 actually looks good or even better than 996 C4S
Although... the 997 front is a little to plain for my tastes (says the guy who changed his on the 996).

A Fister Carma.... Wowwww now that's a sexy car!
Congrats!

I'm selling my C4S and getting a 991 S cab. absolutely love it!
That said... a Carma is... well a very unique ride.

Let us know how you like it.
Good luck!

As of now, I am looking at a bill of 4k, but remember that is not just an ims upgrade, it also includes actuators/solenoids/chain pads, being changed as well. The actual ims upgrade is not that expensive, dropping the engine is what brings the price high. I guess any upgrade ims is better than stock. I think I am getting L&N one, have to check.

Actuators/Solenouds/chain pads....I did not realize those have to be upgraded as well. Tell me more, why is that? Do yo replace the Clutch as well while you are at it?

Pretty much you are telling me I need to add 4K to the price of the car. THanks

No, the actuators and the chain pads are being done because one of my actuator on bank 1 failed on me, giving me a check engine light. When the variocam covers were taking off, the mechanic noticed that the chain pads also need to be replaced. I did the ims upgrade since the engine is coming out to replace the actuator and solinoids. To change the solinoids the engine does not need to come out, but for the actuators it does. The mechanic is also checking the clutch to see the condition. While the engine is out the clutch can be replace also, so the 4k bill could go higher. In your case it can be lower, since the IMS, is the only upgrade. I just got my C4S, too. I got it about two months ago, and now spending this kind of money, for me, it really sucks. But I realized these cars do need to be taking care off mechanically, it is what it is.

Couple of questions on your new C4S:
1) What year and how many miles...what did you pay for it...you can PM me if you prefer
2) Who did you buy the car from? individual or dealer? Did they disclose the issues?
3) What should I be looking for when checking out the C4S...have identified two on Ebay that look interesting.
