Anyone ever replace the factory litronic HID projectors with something else before?

Hi Everyone,

To start off, I love quality bright lights with a good cut off line. I have factory litronic's HID in my car, it's a 2003 Boxster S. It shares the same headlight as the 996. The reason why I'm posting here is because no one has done it in the 986 forums, so I'm trying my chances here.

Has anyone tried to replace the factory HID projectors with a higher quality projector before? Our projectors are frosted and it limits the amount of light that is capable of being outputted as well as the quality of the cut off line.

I'm looking to replace the projectors with another set of 2.5" projectors with clear lens.. Has this been done before?

After you've done this, you may find that the frosting didn't reduce the light as much as it made it even. It's not an accident that most household & worklight bulbs are frosted rather than clear.

With all due respect, how much research have you done on the effects of clear lens versus frosted lens?

Here's a simple video demonstrating just the difference between swapping out a frosted lens with a clean lens...

I would do the same, but based upon my research and speaking with a few vendors of clear lens, I have not come across a clear lens with the correct focal point for the reflector portion of the projector housing.

With that being said, my only other option would be to swap out the entire projector.

I haven't heard of this being done. I looked at the links above. My question is this: what's the benefit of a razor sharp cutoff? I think the OEM HIDs are excellent. I put new bulbs in mine this year and they produce outstanding light color and dispersion. I'm not necessarily against an improved cutoff, I'm just curious about what this modification would actually do in terms of improved functionality.

My old 2002 996 factory HID was bright enough.

However, my Gallardo was way too dim. I upgraded the bulb and ballast to a 50w Morimoto one. Stock was 35w. It was whiter and brighter. I am not sure if you should modify the lens as that may lead to glare for upcoming traffic. That's one of the reasons it's illegal to use halogen housing with HID bulb.

You may want to upgrade the bulb / ballast instead of the stock lens.

seanmcr6 is infamous around these parts
"The penalty is your cutoff is less distinct and not particularly colorful and thus is not as impressive."

There is your answer to why mod to a clear lens....
