Thanks 150. With 75,000 now on the clock, I've got her going in for IMS, RMS, Clutch and AOS, water pump and 160 T Stat next week. I'll feel better driving her hard after getting those items done. Have a great weekend.

Hi Guys, thanks for the notes. The front bumper is part of the "Carrera Cabrio Aerokit" sold by Suncoast. The suspension is an older Bilstein PSS9 set up. It rides very nicely...especially since I raised it 1/2" from some of the photos. It was hitting bump stops once in a while. Some other options: short shifter, alum pedals, Fabspeed intake, DCR 19" rims, techart front light covers, yellow painted brake calipers, hard top, new Goodyear F1 Asymmetricos, etc.

I'm taking it in next week for RMS, IMS, AOS and Clutch. I'm also doing the waterpump / orginal at 75K. I'm considering the 160F T stat too. Might do plugs again. They are just 20K old, but 3 years. Any thoughts? Do new tubes too? How about wires and coil packs? (or just check them?)

It's a no brainer if you're doing the plugs to at least check the tubes for any cracks and replace the o-rings since they're cheap. Checking the tubes and coil packs should suffice.

Major Service Cost

Well, after talking with 4 different places including one dealer bid, I've settled on a guy I feel very comfortable with: Concourse Auto Werks in Salt Lake. The dealer bid was $4900. The second bid (was hoping it was lower and gave them every chance) he quoted me an open end 22-25 hours of labor....ouch. Although $80 per hour cheaper than the dealer, I don't like that he is saying double the time needed. Either inexperienced, or just milking it. The third bid was given by a company that both responded quickest AND was the most thorough and competent in their reply...FLINTWORKS and owner Alden there. I would have had to drive my car to San Jose' which is 775 there and back. He was actually the least expensive, the most confident and I really want to give him the business, just can't make sense out of putting the 1700 miles on my rig and taking 3 days to get it done with drive time.
So, my fourth bid is as follows:
Clutch/IMS/RMS $2400
Water pump,genuine porsche / and low temp T stat / belt $850
AOS and install $375
NGK plugs and install $140
Fuel filter, AC filter and install, oil change w/my oil $150
He will also check tensioners and all other parts while in there. Hopefully all will be good, but I'll replace it if worn or damaged. My main reason for this service is to get the IMS done, my car runs great, burns NO oil and leaks not a drop. I'm hoping I don't get back a dripping car or I'll be super bummed. I'm putting the pressure on the mechanic and letting him know how OCD I am about this stuff, so hopefully he double and triple checks his work! Thanks Guys, anything else I should look at doing...suggestions?

Can I ask why you are doing the IMS? I just bought my 996. The next day the RMS, clutch and Flywheel needed replaced (I pick it up Friday) Bereton Porsche in Ore gave me a bid on part (they were 1400 cheaper than Peoria Porsche). PP then matched the parts bid. But wouldn't do the IMS on my car - they said it's not part of the job. Then reading further here, I have determined that 2% of the 996 have that IMS failure. This is my first, and hopefully not my last, Porsche. She is a 1 owner w 35k 2001 996 C4

I would do the IMS. I just had an entire diatribe written and my computer blipped and I lost it. Anyway, for $600 extra, find a good person to do your car. I'll PM you my number and explain my thoughts.

Good links/info:

http://www.lnengineering.com/ims.html

A reputable Indy shop: Call this guy if you can do a 3-4 day coast run. Alden at Flintworks is awesome, has done many of what you need and is very reasonable! This is his contact: 408-371-3380 /// ask him his thought on a garage queen and the IMS. He'll give it to you straight. He can do your Clutch, RMS, AOS and IMS for just a hair over $2K. Beats the hell out of dealers and even my bids....but I don't have time to do the drive, the miles, etc.

I'll PM you my number / good luck! I'd do it. Chris
