Seat Belt "Receiver" - "painting: the red part

the red part on my front seat belt receivers is all faded & scratched - looks like replacing them means swapping out the the whole unit which will cost about $200 for the pair, plus involves removing the seats.

Obviously I'd prefer to paint/refinish just the red part but am not convinced it's going to last very long. I'd probably need some pretty tough enamel paint to withstand the belt scratches.

anyone done this or have any good ideas?

it's the circled bit in the picture i'm talking about - cheers, alan

Really, I don't think I would paint it, because the paint will eventually chip off. If it really bothers you that much see if you can snag one used.

Could you not sand and buff the scratches out?

i'm going to try but the red part doesn't come out as far as i can tell. worst case, it doesn't work, and i then try paint. if that doesn't work i'll try ebay.

previously i didn't really notice as the whole interior looked beatup, but now that i have painted all my interior trim pieces, refinished the leather & vinyl and re-stained the carpet it is the one piece that still looks old inside the car (other than me!)
