Headlight Makeover Time
Headlight Makeover Time
Nothing Earth shattering here, but it did turn out really well. I looked at all the existing threads and decided to use the
to get rid of the severe yellowing and random gunk on the lenses (12 years old, poorly refinished a couple times by well intentioned people!). This left the lights looking literally like new. Amazing results. Took me 3-4 hours to do, very easy job.
However, everyone says it doesn't last long unless you coat the lights with something since you've taken the UV protectant off with all the sanding. I decided to use the sealant that comes with the . It's a nanotechnology cross linking polymer sealant (which sounds pretty cool) made by Konexis and you can't get it on it's own, so you need to get this kit. Goes on very easily and still looks great. Only been 2 hours so not sure if it will protect from the yellowing or not.
This combination was mentioned by someone in a thread who claimed to have tried them all, so I followed his advice!
Also ordered new corner pieces as the old ones leaked and were all full of water/condensation on the inside. They look a little grayer than the lights but better in person than they look in the photos.
Remaining task is to replace the gaskets that surround the lights. The old ones just disintegrated. You can't order these new from Porsche (without the whole light assembly). Breakers know they are rare so charge a lot ($150 each I was quoted) so will be doing a DIY weatherstripping that someone on a Boxster message board worked out. His photos looked good, so hopefully mine turn out OK. Will find out next week when it arrives.
A couple "after" pictures attached. the last one is "before". Big difference on the car.
Cheers, Alan

Looks good! I've heard that putting 3M cleartastic over the lens will also prevent yellowing. The previous owner of my P car had the entire front end covered with it. I've had it a year and a half and no yellowing of the lens.
I guess I will be trying that next time if this space-age nano-stuff doesn't work as advertised!
