I don't necessarily go overboard in the mods dept but I did add 19" wheels and Michelin's. I usually do things to my car that the manufacturer should have done, like my thread on wiring the right side rear fog light and changing my front fog light bulbs to yellow. Hey, it's your car...do to it what you will.

Maybe that's why I always liked 993's so much. The end of the era. Nothing to upgrade it to. It will forever be locked in as what it is - the last of the air-cooled.

Porsche makes beautiful, well engineered cars but they are not perfect. Almost all cars are built as a compromise, to be able to meet the requirements of a specific market segment. As such, they are not perfect for everything, but a compromise in many ways. If you want your car to be competitive on the track you need to modify the suspension, engine, tires, etc.. If you want a long distance cruiser then you may want to go with a softer spring rate and install touring tires.

If you want to make your car stand out in a crowd then you personalize it. People have modified cars since cars were first made. What's the big deal? I will be one of the first to say that someone has ruined a car when they put some gaudy piece of junk on it. I do this because, in my opinion, the modification was not aesthetically pleasing to me. I do not, however, think that there is anything intrinsically wrong with changing the look of the car.

I know that the original point was that one should not modify a specific model to appear to be another. OK, why not? It would be illegal to sell a 996 as a 997, even if they look the same, so this is not a problem. The Blue Book value of a "tribute car" is never the same as the real thing, so this is not a problem.

What is the problem? Is it because you perceive this to lower the value of the "real thing"? I think that you will find this to be untrue as well. Watch a few Mecum auctions and you will see what I mean.

It annoys me that some people perceive it to be some kind of travesty to modify a Porsche. It is a car; not some Holy thing. Deal with it.

Actually "Up", one of the many things that frequently happen to these nearly perfect cars is that people who make a lot of changes to them often experience systemic problems that cost a lot of time, money and frustration to repair. But you already know this....

My car has been modified with a 3.8 liter cup engine, 20" wheels with the correct tire diameter. It also has a K&N filtercharger system. It has a complete Fabspeed exhaust system with no cats installed, so I am getting bank 1 &2 oxygen sensor codes. The ECU has been programmed by Fabspeed. The engine runs smooth as silk until the lights pop on, and then it seems that the car goes into a limp home mode... After this the engine loses power and does not run smooth. Any ideas?

Yep. Leave it stock. I've owned 3.5 Porsches (Cayenne counts half). And they've all been ... Perfect. Try a little Camomile Tea with breakfast and then take it to the dealer and have them fix the brake problem before it gets serious.

There is big difference between a retro modded 1957 bel air and a modded lets say porsche 996,996tt or god forbid ferrai. While older hot rod/muscle cars can bring big money a lot more has been put into them then made at auction =unless they have a storied history. High end euro cars are almost always stock and expected to be unless race historybottom line yes they are just cars and are owned by individuals that can do with them as they please but mods lower a cars value to the new owner (as a rule not a definite) and cost a lot of cash you will never get back.I speak from experience as I have upgraded many cars in my over 40 years of the hobby from a 340 powered 1936 plymouth my first car to vettes porsches you name it and Ive ruined cars like a 1969 428cj mach1 always money wasted some worth it most not=Im done lol.

While walking thru a Target store with my wife yesterday I saw a pair of black and white fuzzy dice in their auto dept. My wife saw me looking at them and said "Oh he** no!". I won't be able to post a pic for you guys now.

Hey "up and over"

I agree with you that the cars are not Holy, Only God should be considered Holy, which He is.

Some times we feel that our cars are a statement of who we are and modifying a Porsche is not an issue. I can understand both sides..... "to modify or not to modify, that is the question". ( I think this quote is either Shakespear or Popeye, I can never remember)

I think that one needs to have a plan with a goal at the end. I mean by this, just don't put parts on your car because they are on sale or because your buddy did the same. Your mods. should be enhancing an already great car.

Having said this, the only mod. I did with my 2003 Targa was change the front fender marker lights from the orange to clear lenses.

No dice in the Porsche , please. I think your owners manual has a legal clause in it stating this!
