Red warning light

Hello.
I just got a 996 carrera 2 coupe yesterday, that I took in on a deal from a car I was selling, and when I turn on the car, this light stays on for some seconds:

Can anyone tell me what it is from? I though it would be from the engine hood that wasn't closed right, so I opened and shut it a little hard, but the light is still on.

Regards

I think warning light signals a problem of some kind with the spoiler.

Perfectly normal. The light should go off once you drive off. FYI, the spoiler raises at 75mph, and should retract once your below 37mph. Congratulation, are your new buy. Now drive it like you stole it.

Yeah, once I start to drive it the light goes off. So this is totally normal?

Thanks!

I wouldn't say this is totally normal behavior. The light goes off almost instantly in my 996, like the other warning lights. If this light stays on for a little while, then there might be a problem with the spoiler as Macster said. Have you tried manually raising and lowering the spoiler? There's a little switch by the fuse box on the driver's side.

Totally normal, it turns on when the car starts, and deactivates once the car goes to 3mph or above -- this was told to me by an Porsche Mechanic when I was getting a PPI on another 996 before I bought mine.

Yep - totally normal and deactivated by speed. Nothing to worry about - enjoy your car!

I'd be more concerned with all the major engine problems these cars always develop at exactly 58892 miles.

Get your car ECU computer hooked up to a data reader and see if your spoiler mechanism is an issue. That is not uncommon .

Not based on my experience with my Boxster or Turbo. While the warning light, all warning lights come on when the key is turned to on, they all go off as the engine fires and starts to run.

The only time I've had a warning light on at any other time, save a CEL, a coolant light, and a brake warning light, is the spoiler light in my Boxster.

I pulled into the office parking lot and the spoiler light was on and the spoiler was up too. In a hurry to get to the office I just left the car parked and when on in the office.

At lunch I might have tried something, the manual raise/lower button maybe, but I do not remember now.

What I do remember is I drove a few miles to lunch and back -- not even at freeway speeds -- and when I got back the light was out and the spoiler was down.

Since then it has never done this again. Oh, this was shortly after I washed the engine.

It's the Porsche "boner light" to indicate the excitement you are about to have driving your P-car.

I checked mine again yesterday. Mine goes off with all the other lights, as I originally thought.
