996 starter wire problem HELP
996 starter wire problem HELP
My 2001 996 won't start. When turing the key I hear a pop at the starter solenoid, battery is good, clutch switch good. Last night when it was dark I saw a quick flash at the solenoid when trying to start the car. Seems like the starter is the issue so I went to remove it this afternoon. I found some corroded and deteriorated insulation on the wire that is the main feed to the starter. The other wire looks like it goes to the alternator?? I assume this needs to be replaced! Has anyone done this? I can't find a replacement harness online and don't even know where the other end goes after disappearing on the passenger side of the motor. I suppose I could strip the last inch or two and get a new connector and make it work, seems there is enough spare wire left. Advice and help would be much appreciated!! Below is a pic.
Wow, thats a mess. I would re-terminate the wires with new connectors. You might want to get an auto electrician to do it as they need to be clamped on real tight. One lead will go to the main bus, and the other to the alternator.
Yep, a mess! I was able to find a post on another forum about it. Finally found the OEM part for $50-65 (part number 99660701903 if anyone needs the AS cable loom in the future) so I'll go with a new one.
Thanks for the reply!
