Also even though the LN bearing retrofit is now considered a wear item and should be replaced at the specified interval, just now we are seeing some of the real world long term results start popping up. One member took his retrofit bearing out at 32k miles, which is a lot sooner than the specified interval due to abnormal wear characteristics. I gotta wonder how the general porsche crowd is going to interpret this. I don't think people should have a false sense of security just because their car had been retrofitted with a new bearing if you are gonna be putting on a lot of miles for the long haul.

Fortunately for us, we have quite a few more options now on the market which in theory seem more permanent and doesn't require regular maintenance or replacement.

While the internet may be blowing the frequency out of proportion, if it happens to you, it IS a big deal. Hasn't happend to me, but I have 2 friends in different states that both lost Boxsters to failed IMSBs, and one was an LNE retrofit CHB that was only installed 5k miles ago, by a Porsche dealer (Cary, NC). They failed to stand behind the install, claiming it was out of warranty (which it was), and that there are just too many other possible causes. They claim the bearing just "broke", but whether the bearing broke first or was collateral can not be proven. If I still have the car, (likely), I will likely go The Solution route when my indie gets certified, which he plans on, when I get my clutch & RMS need to be done in a year or 2. I do most of my own work, but the clutch/solution/RMS just looks like too much. We'll see.

Just got my clutch changed and flywheel and at the same time had the LN engineering kit installed for piece of mind. I have a C2 99 and less chance of failure, but I look it as part of maintenance on the car. I have nearly 70,000 on the clock and no issues, but I expect my clutch to last some time now so might as well do the change for the piece of mind.

I just came across the "Eisen IMS Settlement" ... anybody familiar with this class action suite? You have before Oct 15, 2013 to put in yor claim for reimbursement for the IMS related engine repair or replacement.

check: www.Eisenimssettlement.com or call 1(866) 254-4760

Hey Mike. Yeah, probably 99.96% of the people here know about the settlement. Read the terms of it carefully. If you actually experienced IMSB-related damage, you should file a claim. If not, toss the paperwork into the trash.

OK ..Better late than never ... So what you are saying is if I didn't have an engine go bust, then they won't reimburse any money? Regardless, if you had the bearing changed as a preventive measure because you were seeing oil leakage out the RMS?

I didn't get any actual paperwork from porsche about it ... actually my car was in for service at my porsche mechanic ... he told me that the RMS seems damp from oil and said its possibly leaking a bit .. He was the one that gave me the website and told me to check to see if I can get any money back for the job.

Whats the thoughts on this?

These guys do full engine rebuilds for 6K on the 996. If mine goes out, a rebuilt engine goes in. 99 C2 with close to 90K, running strong, not afraid to drive hard.

Do a search on those folks... And another thing: if parts at cost are around 3k average (or much more if adding nockies, etc) and an engine rebuild is about 40 hours give or take, at an low average of $120/h..... Do the math. It does not add up even on the low end. Again, do a search...

I did. Over 600 feed backs with 100% positive ratings. 15 years of rebuilding porsche engines and only porsche engines. I'm convinced. Did you read through the web site? Impressive.

I wonder how they have 100% positive feedback on eBay with over 600 feed backs? That's odd? eBay typically has tough customers because the buyer is so protected by eBay. MM says their bad feedback on Google sites is mostly from competitors, but they do seem to have many complaints on Google searches. I guess if the price is that good, you should be suspicious. There are lots of people who are very happy as well on the forums. Looks like a crap shoot, I guess.

I replaced my IMS with the LN bearing at 70k miles when I did my clutch. The old bearing was a little tight, but still in working condition. Seal was intact.
