I purchased a 2000 with 92k miles on it,.. did the IMSB as a preventative measure when I have the Clutch replaced. Bingo. That's all I've done other than one set up tires. No scary 2-5K a year or anything. Get's decent gas mileage and has been wholly reliable. no,. wait,.. had to replace the oil pressure sender but that was 5 minutes and like $40 for the part.

My only real costs were the PSS9 suspension and alignment... the 19" wheels and Michelin PS2's and and the Alpine/JL Audio sound system. There were all non-necessary things I did.

And that's where your expenses will come in.. The radio will leave you wanting after a while so you'll upgrade that... then you'll see one that has been lowered and you'll start thinking that yours will look a bit better without as much gap between tire and fender... but the wheels look kinda small... so might as well do that with a suspension mod... HEY!.. Were those clear corner lights?.. look pretty good... and so on and so on... it's a never ending cycle when you are a car guy.

Get a PPI and talk to the guy. Is he a Dr that just got it because his other buds had a Porsche or is he an enthusiast?

Now if only I could find a way to keep my BMW and shrink my house while expanding my driveway/garage...

Looking forward to getting more involved.
Coming from another ex-BMW loyalist, I'd say just ditch the Bimmers, drive the 911 for a month and you won't look back. Eh, who am I kidding, if I had the garage space I'd pick up another 840 in a heartbeat. Good luck with the purchase, it really is a different animal and you are going to have a blast.
