Porsche 996 Targa input requested
I am new to the Forum, and have a few questions. I am interested in a 2003 996 Targa available in Southern California. 52k miles, 6 sp, looks right. Price around $28k. Any advice on smart questions to ask regarding pre-purchase inspection, IMS issues, etc.
The car is in Southern CA, I live in Austin TX. How would you propose to arrange a PPI on this car, and would you recommend making IMS update part of the negotiation. Any info on transport costs and methods of transport from CA to TX should deal close.
Thanks so much for your info.

I bought my car in California. I researched PPI providers and picked one. The seller took the car in for the PPI. I spoke with the PPI mechanic and made sure that he understood that he worked for me, not the seller. The PPI turned up a few things which were negotiated into the final price. I flew out to California for a final visual inspection and then drove the car home after I bought it. I'd highly recommend this.
Make sure you research and understand the tax laws in your state and the seller's state before you get the deal done. In my case, I had to pay a $15 transfer of title fee in the seller's state and I had to pay sales tax when I registered the car in my home state.

Thanks, Dennis. Very helpful. I owned a '78 911SC Targa in the early 80's and am now in a position to jump back in. I am interested in a 1999 to 2003 911 cabriolet, Carrera 4, or Targa, and there is not a great selection in Central Texas (Austin) unless I am just not looking the right places. Maybe someone local can point me toward a source.
Seems the selection in Southern California is much greater, and I am fascinated with the 'new' Targa as I really enjoyed my '78. Are there any 99-2004 Targa drivers out there with any tips for me? Also, what should I look for when evaluating a Cab in this date range?
I have seen a lot written about the flip of the coin regarding IMS bearing replacement in this date range. Would you recommend including the upgrade to a ceramic IMS into any negotiation for purchase, or is this generally not acknowledged by a seller?
Thanks for any assistance.
