Tranny leaking
 

New to me 1999, C2 911 Cab with Tiptronic and 84K mile on it has been on my lift for 6-8 weeks. I'm going thru it front to back. Just got done with new front struts and removed the bumper cover and cleaned/inspected radiators . . . a ton of crud in there. Earlier, 3 - 4 weeks ago, I cleaned the engine and tranny, very oil covered. Noticed today that the tranny oil pan was completely covered with a coating of oil/ATF with a couple of drips hanging from the lower edge near the engine. The car has not been driven since cleaned and only started 5-6 times. I assume its the pan gasket, but maybe not. Any suggestions or ideas will be greatly appreciated. I should have done a search, will do that shortly. Larry

More than likely a gasket or loose bolt.

pan gasket is a possibility....if it's leaking that much make sure you fix/reseal gasket if it is. You will end up with a new tranny if you are leaking ATF...ask me how I know

Jay, Yes, this is exactly what it looked like before I cleaned it. Now, it has a thin film of ATF covering it, along with a couple of drips. Have you determined the what the source of the leakage is and what the fix would be?

I took it to a independent Porsche shop for a diagnosis, like your case the entire underside covered in gunk. leaking cam seal and spark plug tube O ring. The transmission they explained was sweating fluid. normal for 80K. New gasket filter and fluid did the trick a year ago.
After you drain the fluid you may want to change it every 30K instead of 90K. I actually changed it twice at 80K. The second time a week later, i couldn't find a fluid exchange procedure like other cars have by disconnecting one of the hoses at the tranny cooler.
This may be in my head but the shifts are much quicker and smoother now, especially down shifts.
The new fluid is the golden color like fresh motor oil, the last owner had it done at 54K I hate to see what it looks like at 90K.

Jay, did you make the changes of fluid, filter and gasket yourself or did the indie do it? Either way did you use Porsche ATF or would any high quality ATF work? If you made the change, how did you fill the new fluid? Bentley manual shows special filler tool. Like I'm finding out, the P-car service is more difficult then it needs to be . . . damn. All services are extremely easy to perform, you can PM or call if you need help. Rentech has an ATF DIY I followed.Purchased everything from Sunset Porsche in Oregon. the ATF is on amazon a bit cheaper.

Thanks for all the great info. The Rentech DIY was just what I needed . . . should save me 200-300 bucks . . . that, friends, makes my lovely wife very happy and helps with retirement income.

Check or replace your differential fluid while you have the it up on the lift.
