Watch videos on youtube - they teach you everything you need to know to do a good job. It is my opinion that you have to take the wheel off of the car to do it right, but, some folks do not. I also found it best to mask off all but 1/2 inch of the tire. Leave 1/2 inch of rubber showing and coat that half inch just like you are coating the wheel. When you are done, you tear off that 1/2 inch strip and it leaves a perfect edge. You must put on 5+ coats if you want to peel it....but, fear not, even if you don't want to put that much product on the inside of the wheel, they sell a dip dissolve solution. Spray it on, wait 5 minutes, spray it on, wait 5 minutes, hose off the dip...back to your original wheels. I love the stuff. I have had mine on for 5 months now...daily driver...rain and shine...still looks great.

To answer your question, they only look at me funny after I tell them it is plasti-dip. Maybe they can afford an 1800 dollar wheel set.....for me, it is plasti-dip.

Good luck,

let me know if you have any questions.

Great job! They look great....How difficult it is to remove it if you change your mind?

The more coats you put on,the easier it will peel off in one piece. I suggest 5-6 coats. No more than 2 coats of the gloss

I have not actually ever taken it off....but, I will tell you that when it comes to wheels, I did not spray enough coats on the inner part of the wheel to allow it to be pealed. That in conjunction with all the curves of the wheel, I will not peel it if I go to remove it. I will get some "dip desolver" from dipyourwheels.com (no affiliation). You just spray the wheels, let them sit for 5 minutes, repeat, and then hose off the dip. There are videos available showing the process.

Good luck...you really cannot go wrong.

I haven't done the Plasti-Dip route yet but I have painted my brake calipers blue. If you're going to do this, remember to purchase a set of PORSCHE caliper lettering. After applying to your newly painted calipers, put a coat or two of clear heat resistant enamel over the lettering.
I saw this Viper with the look I think we're going for. He should have blacked out the barrel inside too. What do you think?

NO...do not sand.... The whole point to plastidip is that it is totally reversible!! All you need to do is clean your wheels.

I never do the inside of the wheels. Once they are on the car you can't notice. Once brake dust and dirt get in there it really blends in.

I always permanently paint the inside barrels black. This makes the face of the rim stand out more without distortions. And masks any brake dust making it look more uniform. This is a personal decision of course but a lot of higher end rim manufacturers have also been doing this. That's actually where I got the idea when I bought some BBS RGR's awhile ago. My Champions came with the inner barrels painted black too.

I'm not a fan of blacked out lights - or anything else that decreases the light emitted from them. It's your car and you'll have to make the call.

The turbo has blacked out tail lights that I haven't seen during daylight. Good point though especially with so many texters on the road. I was on a 2 hr drive this morning and found countless drivers behind me look down going 80+. I try to change lanes just to avoid them on the road.

I'm going to paint the barrel because as you said, the break dust is patchy. Not a fan of the smeared look.

NJ vehicle code regarding any modifications to vehicle lights is similar to CA's. Illegal. Anything that changes the amount of light emitted from OEM lens is illegal. I'm with denversteve, I'm not a fan of blacked out/tinted lights either.

Technically I'm sure a lot of us have "illegal" things on our cars being on these enthusiast forums. A lot of us run things designed for "off road use only" or mods that don't comply with EPA and/or DOT. I live in Illinois and always guaranteed a min of 3 tickets if I get pulled over(I'd get at least double in Cali)I'm fine paying to play the game. Life's too short and people should do what they like.

Always looking out, thanks. Beat me in looking up gov site. Looking at the turbo tail light pic below, looks like I'll be taking those off then. Previous owner is from ny where the laws may be different...unless I take Alpine003's approach....

Living dangerously! What is your 3 tix minimum? You brought up a good point that has me concerned but not to the extent not to drive it on the street. Turbo is modded w giac ecu, flash, and then some so I went to their website and found this:

"All of the items GIAC sells are for off road and racing use only and have not been tested or approved by any federal or local governing agency and are not approved or recommended for street use. "

I'll take the recommendation to take the blacked out lights off for safety from other people. But I will take the turbo for a drive when the husband is not looking. Living on the edge in itself

I agree with you that people should do what they like. I'm a retired police officer in CA. I would rather not waste precious driving time by getting pulled over and cited for visible add-ons that could be avoided. That's just me. Why give the police a reason to stop you? I could never figure that out.
