Should I buy back totalled 996 from insurance co?
Glad she wasn't hurt and I feel your pain! My son "borrowed" mine to run to Walgreens one night while I was out of town and was swiped by an F-250 on the driver's side. Luckily, it wasn't nearly as deep as the hit your wife took! The ROPS deployed, but nothing was damaged by that.
It's been in the shop since June 3rd and body parts finally arrived from Stuttgart yesterday (all brand new OEM). The estimate total came to $12,900, to include new left front quarter panel, driver's door shell and left rear quarter panel. Maurer's Collision here in Albuquerque is doing the work and they've got a really good reputation. If all goes well, I should have it back by the 25th.
Oh yea, my son was told he's paying the $500 deductible plus the two payments I've made since the accident. It would have been cheaper for him to walk the 3 blocks!

Ouch. Sorry to hear, philthy57.
I'm going to take some pics now that I have the car back and post up a thread to part the car out this weekend. I'd like to keep a set of body panels in case I turn this into a track car in a couple years. They can be in horrible shape and random colors, but I'd prefer to trade my body panels for some really bad ones plus money.

First a question. Did the side airbag fire? I just like that idea that it works after all this time. Bear in mind, you can haggle with the insurance company. Another $1k to be done with it might be no big deal to them but it would be an extra grand in your pocket. If they give you another grand, maybe it's not worth your time to part it out, depending on what you make. Are you willing to give up your free time to get it parted out? Is your wife going to be happy with the reminder of her accident sitting in the driveway while people are picking the bones? If you sell intend to sell it as a whole vehicle, I doubt that a salvage guy would want to pay anything more than 5k. It does have value for the right person. If the tires and rims are good, there is a grand there. The top looks new. I guess the amount of miles regardless of the IMS would be a factor for me.
No, the side airbags didn't fire. You make a lot of good points. We tried haggling with the insurance company for some extra money considering the maintenance done and they wouldn't have any of it. We even found a different set of comps, but it's hard to get as specific as 996 convertibles with 70-100k miles that have had the IMS bearing replaced. Oh well, we're getting a fair buyout.
I'm gonna keep the motor and put it in a 986. I figure for ~$12k we'll have one heck of a nice 986. It'll also be easy for me to replace all the small seals and hoses on the motor while it's outside the car. The parts that I can sell off the 996 will be icing on the cake. Parting out cars definitely isn't for everybody, but I'm probably the exception. Thankfully, my wife is very understanding.
