Floor Jacks

I need a recommendation for a good floor jack that has low clearance and will work with an adaptor to fit my 2002 911 996. Would like to get one that is aluminum or aluminum and steel to reduce weight. I saw an aluminum jack adaptor on Amazon or a jack plate adaptor. Not sure what to use. I also need some recommendations for jack stands. What kind should I get and where should they be placed to keep from damaging anything.

Thanks for your help!

Esco jack stands are excellent. Really in a different league then most auto-parts-store or Sears type jackstands, and the only ones I personally trust when sliding under the car. The flat rubber-top ones are perfect for placing under the factory jack points.

Not inexpensive, but crushed ribs cost a bunch too...

For floor jacks, the HF low profile jacks work well and have lasted me years. For jack points, use the factory side body points or the rear suspension cross member. Again, do NOT get under the car with just a floor jack supporting it.

You could always go cheap and get the Harbor Freight Low Profile Aluminum Racing Jack.

I have had good luck with Harbor Freight floor jacks, but haven't used this particular model.

BTW, I've never seen a jack race, but suspect that this racing jack never won any of the races since they didn't mention it...

I just ordered the Schwaben from ECS today. How funny! Have heard great things about it.

For stands, I'm looking into the JackPoints. They run around $300 for a pair, but also include the discs. They have this cool system where the stand slips right under the jack point. A genius idea.

Have used a harborfreight aluminum jack for years on a variety of cars and trucks and very satisfied user. I recently bought these aluminum jack stands that worked GREAT for the 996. Cheap too.

Is that right? $33 for 4 jack stands?

The only thing that concerns me is that part of it seems to be made from cast aluminum yet the load rating says 6k lbs.

When it comes to your safety, don't compromise.

You know the risks.

My question was directed out of curiosity to the guy that actually has them and used them. I already have a full assortment of jacks and jack stands and don't plan on getting anything anytime soon.

This has been working really well for me and gives me plenty of room for my creeper.

I have used the harbor freight low profile jack for years now. I have never had any issues. They are very low and last a while with heavy use.

This is one of the ones in my arsenal too. HF is good but QC isn't consistent so you just have to check the jack before you use it for the first time as it may require bleeding.

Yeah, clearly, our life is worth more than the cars we work on.

But what are you basing your opinion that these are unsafe on? Just the fact they are inexpensive? Or do you have any other facts/reviews?

Looking at the JackPoints, they have a top pin that goes into the hole on the car jack point, plus that disk locks into the jack base. That car is locked in and not going anywhere.

Plus the JackPoints are right on the factory jacking spots. I'm just using common sense logic.

I don't think the $33 set of 4 Amazon ones will collapse, but I wouldn't be caught under a car with them either personally. With a hard push on the car, who knows??
