Labour Time on M96 Engine Assembly
Hello, could someone point me in the direction on what the labor time would be to assemble an m96 on the bench, all parts new, from the case halves to the valve covers. Basically a stock engine, never been fired. As well as how you came to those hours (experience would be a definate asset). For me, I feel the book always tends to be a little on the low end, especially from engine swaps. Thanks

Depends on the experience of the assembler with M96 engine assembly.
40 hours is good ballpark assuming everything is pre cleaned throughly.
If you are file fitting the rings that takes lots of time, reusing bolts requires lots of time to clean & apply sealant.
No extra points awarded for speedy assembly.

The engine was apart, and the cases and other hardware cleaned. The tech was awaiting the new IMS and its bearing along with a couple of chain guide rails.
Late the next day I was back late in the day to pick up my car and I walked to the tech's work area expecting to see the engine pieces and hoping for a chance to take some more pictures and not seeing the engine stuff around asked the tech where the engine stuff was.
On the roof was his reply.
On the roof? Why in the world put the engine hardware up there?
A bit a Porsche tech humor, apparently. He said the engine was together and the car road tested and ready for the customer to pick up.
I'd say the tech did this in under 16 hours (2 work days). The previous day I spent some time talking to this tech and I was very impressed with his skill and experience. If this could be done in 2 days he's the guy to do it.
Of course the tech didn't have to fit anything, he just reused all the rings, pistons, bearings, etc. The debris from the failed IMSB was removed the case halves in particular were spotless. The debris never it made it on the clean side of the filter/oil system. (Otherwise he told me Porsche would not have authorized the IMSB "rebuild".)
