For ultimate DRY traction and decent wet grip, I love the Yokohama AD08 which are a bit pricier and a bit harsher ride (stiff sidewalls have sharper turn-in and handling than PSS). I've tracked these before, and they were within a second of my R-comps at Big Willow!

So if you don't routinely push your 996 too hard, any of the tires mentioned above are fine. If you like to take it near the limits, then PSS or ADO8 are your weapons of choice, IMO.
The problem with the PSS, they don't make them in my size for the rear axle (285/30 18). I could go to a 265/35 18, but I lose a 3/4 inch in width.

Sumitomos seem like the best bang for the buck option. I'd personally go Yokohama AD08 for the extra performance (grip and handling). Even if they were available, double the price for PS2 with inferior performance, is just plain offensive!

N-spec not relevant to me as my suspension has been modified beyond the stock setup for which N-specs were developed (PSS10, sway bars, lowered with GT3 spec alignment). As long as the tire meets size, load, and speed requirements for your car, non N-spec tires should be safe and in some cases will outperform OEM rubber.

I have been a client of Bridgestone for the past couple of years. I have the Bridgestone Potenza SO4 and love them I get my tires at Wheel Dynamics in SoCal because they always have the best prices
