My VIN is WP0CA29931S653323.

I read the Porsche of America Cass Action suit regarding the IMS. There was a list of VIN's affected. Mine was NOT included. Does that mean that I do not have to replace my IMS? Thank you for your prompt and honest answer.

It means you weren't included in the class. You still have an IMS bearing that may or may not be problematic so possible replacement requires some risk analysis by you.

 

Exactly right. Your 2001 may have a single-row bearing or a double-row bearing. There is no way to tell from the VIN. In either case it will be up to you to decide whether or not to replace it.

I always err on the side of caution, so I had mine replaced with an upgraded bearing. Others just drive them.

 

My father just shipped me his 2001 C4 bought brand new at Carlson Porsche in CA. Dropped it off at Porsche N. Scottsdale for full 60k service and there was no signs of any metal in the oil change and nothing more than normal oil seepage you get after almost 17 years. Was told that if it was going to go it would have gone by now.

 

Probably true...but always easy for a dealer to make that statement since they don't own the car. Congrats on your new acquisition.

 

You are correct but I would expect them to tell me it needs to be changed right now or it will cost you 20k to replace your motor. But I have a very good relationship with my service manager and dealer having bought a dozen or so Porsches and just this year an AMG GT-S and a C7 Z06. I have also had 5 996's over the years along with a 997 and a 997 S with no problems. But my cars don't get allot of miles on them before I move on to another.
