what's w/ ppl wanting to race porsches?

is it just me, or do ppl constantly wanna do "stoplight drag races" when they see a 911? since i've got my car i've seen slammed civics & bimmers and everything in between who gun it at teh lights... geez. what do u guys do? do u take teh bait or ignore them?

JASCLASS Dec 3, 2003 02:19 PM

I really cant help but to just laugh most of the time, always let them go, they are not worth it, and if you have any urgeto just pass them like they are standing still. :D

Yep, I have noticed this as well....

Mainly younger kids wanting a thrill.

The trick is to give it a quick rev or two while stationary at the lights and then just sit back and watch them take off.....usually into a radar trap hilarious Nah - Thats just mean!

My pet peeve is when someone is tailgating from close behind - I usually lose them after the first street corner though :D

True story................

I was at a stop light in WPK Fl in bumper to bumper traffic about 3 cars back waiting for the light to turn green. I hear the cars engine right next to me Reving ( Supercharged Mustang Cobra 01-02) he then proceeds to pop his clutch to spin his wheels for a sec or 2 ( remember were stopped) all the while his wife in the front and a baby in the back all looking my direction......... I was like "Ok, your absolutely insane"

Scott in H-town Dec 4, 2003 07:54 AM

Baby in back? OMG. That is so incredibly stupid. It's bad enough w/ the wife, but at least she's capable of chewing his ear off.

I think most of these people don't expect to win. They just want to see a 911 in action. I sort of understand. When I'm driving around town, I want to 'play' with very nice cars like Lambos or Fcars some just to hear them go. I don't want to race them or do anything dangerous, but just take off with them for a second or 2 at faster than normal pace. :)

Remember, you're driving what most people would label as a 'dream car'. Sometimes we get so used to it we forget. They just want to see it in action.
OTOH, if it's a charged up Mustang or some muscle car, they probably want to race and beat you so they can claim a 'kill' (that's how those mullet-heads refer to it I think).
I'm mainly talking about the people driving the ordinary cars like BMWs or Civics, etc.

It must be where I live (Jacksonville) but I've received alot of hostile reaction to my car. Twice I've been almost run completely off the road by rednecks in big ole' trucks (intentionally). I was filling up at a gas station and got the evil eye by some lady walking by.

I remember when I was a kid that whenever I saw a cool car like a Porsche, Ferrari, Mazerati, etc... I would plaster my face against the window and stare at it until I couldnt see it anymore. That rarely happens to me in my car, and I think my 996 looks pretty damn good if I say so myself.

Many exotic car owners are a-holes but alot of us are just normal people with a passion for driving cars that perform and look good doing it.

As far as racing... I usually jump them off the line to the speed limit and let them go after that. If the man's gonna nail anyone it's gonna be the sweet-ass Porsche, not the civic!

VERY VERY TRUE! I'm just a blue collar worker myself and I just want to be Ghetto Fabulous here in Ghetto Oakland.

I just rev really hard and they either get a wiff of the straight pipes and say un uh or they go out screeching their tires and I just sit there and pull out casually in second gear. I meet them at the next light sometimes and just then they ask what happened and I say, "Take it to the track".

Pistol Dec 4, 2003 01:29 PM

I apparently get alot of this when im in the city. Usually i only will run against another porsche cuz then the fight is very even. and even then, i never take the car above 80. I realize that if you wanna go, lets drive up to Lime Rock and we can run. Thats where the real race car shows up. not some straight line beast. this brings up an interesting point that i always thought about. The old Dodge viper, 2001 and before. those cares were killers on the straight line, but were they any good coming out of the factory on the track? Like for 80G, i get a porsche that can be taken maybe 7/10 track wise. and push that baby to 10 with a few G in upgrades. Why get a straight line beast? all around performance is needed

Tail gating is so annoying.. and then they never signal or anything so you have no idea which way you need to go to get out of the way.

I rarely get challenged where I live. Once in my first 996TT by a superbike who wanted to see how fast my car was. Another time in my 996 Cab by one of those little Subarus. Most recent was in my X50 by an M5.

I guess these cars are just too plentiful here, plus they're driven mostly by middle-aged rich guys. Lots of 360s, 996TTs, 996s, etc.

Median house price where I live is $2 mil. House next door sold for $18 mil last year.

sharkster Dec 4, 2003 02:21 PM

Kurt, can you send me your guest house on a trailer please:)?
