Floor jack minimum height?

Maybe someone here can give me a quick answer.......... going to get a floor jack/jack stands to do some of my own maintenance. I have a 2001 996 C2 US version which is standard height. Haven't lowered it (yet). What is the minimum height I would need to get adequate clearance to common jacking points? It's asleep right now for the winter and I don't want to wake it up just yet to check. I'm sure some of you wrench guys have an answer to this one.

Thanks in advance.

BTW, if I were to lower it what jack height would work under there?

Joe

This is the one I have, unfortunately they are not avaiable for a couple of months right now.... They'll set you back around $500 but the are worth every penny. My car is lowered and they get in, also the entire jack will slide under the front of my M3 up to the handle which pretty much puts it at dead center of the front end.

There's my jack-stand, next to the M3.....

I believe you need a floor jack that will lower to 5" or so. I bought a ProLift 2-1/4 ton trolley-type floor jack from Pep Boys for $39.95. The package says that it lowers to a minimum height of 5-1/2", but actually goes a bit lower. I believe Sears has a Craftsman floor jack for about the same price that should also work. You might want to also buy an adapter from Tweeks (part #403-625) for $19.95, which fits the jack perfectly into the car's jacking points. I also bought a small piece of rubber from a plumbing supply store and cut a hole in it to accommodate the adapter so that it doesn't scratch the underside of the car when I jack it.

I have this one at $80. 3" minimum. Super light and easy to use.
