Hoovies 6k MK1 996 Inspection and Reccomended maint.
Watched the recent purchase of the 6k 996 Cab from Hoovies garage (bought sight unseen) and finally inspected by a dealer and private mechanic.
Im partial, owning a 996 3.4 coupe and and a turbo. These 3.4 cars, and obliviously the Turbo are both rather robust in many ways. (Many have discussed the different M96 iterations to death, but regarding cylinder head sizing and casting on the 3.4s- there’s some interesting data to compare to larger bore factory engines.) Id bet at 175k miles, this car has a dual row IMS bearing- just speculation.
Like the other 249k mileage 996 3.4 coupe Hoovie had, Id hope he would consider a few items if he’s brave enough to track this. Certainly wouldn’t hurt to add a new LN updated bearing did it in my 3.4 car. A few things I’d suggest if he bites the bullet and hits the track, add an X51 deep sump kit, Check to make sure your oil pick up tube is clear while in there, cheap easy and good insurance for minimal investment.
Throw On a low temp 160 degree thermostat new water pump, some fresh Coolant.Clean out the radiators thoroughly, drop front bumper power wash them out.
Perform all other basic items fresh fluids plugs and consumables.
Consider an aftermarket quality IMS bearing swap/solution for long term use, or at the very least pull the factory sealed end off the ims by removing the cover, and popping that seal-It will allow the bearing to be lubricated properly from engine oil. The 996 factory sump is reasonable for a street, touring car, but there is risk of oil starvation on the track, leading to spun bearings. X51 kit or accusump any m96 if you’re tracking in my opinion regardless of mileage
Pretty interesting to see that there was a deal out there running at this low of a cost, someone could really source a decent 996 address items and have FSI, EBS or a quality engine builder of choice, build a hell of reliable engine and basically have a driver for likely an infinite amount of mileage.

Yes, the Apollo 911 videos definitely launched that channel forward. It’s great to see many of our cars out there taking on some serious mileage. I look forward to seeing what he does with this MK1 can. Hopefully he addresses the basic maint. and does some simple upgrades if he decides to track it (low temp stat, x51 deep sump.)
