oil level question

I changed my oil by myself, but I want to check to see if my oil level is ok. This is what I see:

Oil is cold: on electronic meter, all bars are filled.
2 minutes after pulling into garage: on electronic meter, 3 top bars are empty
10 minutes after pulling into garage: on electronic meter, 2 top bars are empty.

On dipstick, the oil is right below the top (max) notch. The notch itself does not have any oil on it, just right below it on the bar.

So, my oil is a bit on the full side, but is not beyond max (all bars filled) when at operating temps or higher.

Is this acceptable? Should I drain some? (I have a fluid extractor)

I think you are fine as long as your level doesn't exceed max. No need to drain any. You did measure the dipstick when car is level and when engine is cold right? I usually drop in 10 qts. It would show up as 2 bars below full on the dash.

Are you serious?? my owners manual says to measure the oil when the car is at operating temp. I have an 2004. Is the manual wrong?

When my car is cold, i have all the bars full, all the way up to the max!!!

your oil needs to drain back into the oil pan to have an accurate reading. at operating temp, most of the oil are still dripping back to the pan and that's why the level is always lower than it really is. This is why the electronic meter waits 4-5 min after the car is shut down to read the oil level. Even after 4-5 mins, not all the oil is returned to the oil pan. Your most accurate reading is when engine is cold. If it's over max, you should take a little out. If it's still under max, I would leave it. If you poured more than 10 qts, you have too much oil.
