I don't know the answer. On my M3 (with manual tranny) you had to remove the fill plug and check with your finger. Maybe it's the same?
Nova996 is right...You need to get under the car, find the tranny fill plug (located on the side of the transmission and probably takes about a 15mm or 17mm allen wrench to unscrew) remove the plug and stick your finger in the hole. If you can reach down and touch gear lube - the level is OK.
This isn't something you'll need to do often. Unless you've blown a seal (even if that's just ice cream), you won't use any tranny oil.
I noticed that a lot of guys with 3 Series Beemers were changing to Redline gear oil...Anyone here do this? I've only got about 3,000 Km on my C2 and it's still really tough to shift on the cold mornings.
