What's that gunk under my car?

When I installed my exhaust system I noticed the castings under my car looked like they had some kind of protective coating sprayed/dipped on them. What is that stuff? Does it come off? I imagine the detailed underside of a 996 must look pretty awesome. Anyone ever get that board?

mostlikely cosmoline

djantlive Jul 22, 2006 06:15 PM

it's cosmo!

Why is it there? Does it come off? Well, I'm sure it comes off, the question is how and how much of a job is it?

Its just a coating to protect the underbody fromt he factory...

Helps against rust and the elements...

I hated it and got bored enough one weekend to attack it. Oilflo safety solvent and small brushes. A very messy job but worth it to me

Dr Toothbrush, that is some dedicated Concours work!

slvrb6turbo Aug 19, 2006 02:37 PM

Wow, what a huge difference that makes. I wonder if there is any downside to doing this...

If you live (and drive during the winter) in an area where the roads are salted I think I would leave the cosmoline on for some added corrosion protection. However, AFAIK Porsches in Europe don't have the cosmoline applied so I really don't think it would hurt not to have it and still drive in the winter..

Interesting...
