Those with Fabspeed bypass pipes
Jenner,
I went from the stock exhaust to the Bypass pipes. They are, in my opinion, the only way to go on this car. I think you'll be very happy
..not to mention that they did scare my German Shorthair the first time she heard it

I have the bypass pipes on my car and they sound teriffic! however the engine note used to change at 5.5k which I assumed was the variable cam timing? now it does not... so did the stock mufflers have some sort of valve in them?

Is there any chance that your car was order with the Porsche Sport Exhaust (PSE)? Is there a switch on the dash? If so that is why you heard the note change because there is a valve in the sport mufflers.

Guys and Gals(!) thanks for all your help. I decided I am going to get some bypass pipes from Aron that will reuse my sport tips. I'll post my impressions when I get them installed. Thanks for pushing me over the edge
Here is a video(2.6mb right click and save as) of what Aron is offering for around $250 depending on options:

Bypass options are: Tips, no tips(straight round pipe sticks out), and the third option is ability to use factory 996 tips.
Half the price of Fabspeed is another great selling point. Hope this helps anyone looking to do what I am.

The cat is out of the bag now guys... I've been developing some products, including muffler bypass pipes for the 996. My launch has been delayed by a supplier that raised his rates when he found out they were for Porsches and I drove a new one.
I hope to seal the deal with a new supplier today and begin production next week of bypass pipes that are compatible with the factory Porsche tips. I will also offer them as straight pipes for the recreational user that wants to have a blast on track days without bleeding cash.
I can't confirm pricing until the deal is done, but I am targeting <$200 shipped.
As Jenner mentioned, I made a video (on a windy day, I know) of what they sound like.

Stay tuned....

Sounds awesome!
Great video. I've been debating getting the bypass pipes for some time now, and I'm worried about the noise level. Also, do you have a website or can you post some close up pics of the pipes installed and separately as well? I'm looking to hopefully keep my current tips (which are factory C2 tips that I had powder coated).
I just got my pipes from Aron. They will go on this weekend! I got the pipes that will allow me to use my existing tips. Will post pics and my sound and installation impressions to this thread and a new thread once I have them.
