Weird sound near the engine & exhaust

This morning I started the engine up and heard a continuous clunking noise at the bottom of the engine near the exhaust. I thought it was a bad pulley. I drove the car to see if any changes in performance. Car seemed fine but the noise is still there. Then I took the car to two shops for opinions. One shop told me that it could be a broken counter balance shaft and that would be replacing the engine. The second shop diagnosed a left cat. inner parts loose and need replace.

I went home with no clear answer. With conflicting diagnoses, I am confused.

Anyone had a similar problem with his or her car in the past? Thanks!!!

Sounds like a bad cat by your symptoms. When the exhaust cools down, try hitting each cat with your hand. These run from left to right at the rear of the car just under the apron. If they rattle, then you have found your problem.

Yeah!! I just did a quick test on the cat. I banged on the cat. and heard some clunking sound likes something is loose inside. Glad it's the cat.

The shop that told me that the counter balance shaft is Autowerks in Huntington Beach. The other one is Hergesheimer Motorsport in Lake Forest. I really like Mike (owner) of Hergesheimer. I trust him because he & his wife seem to be honest people. Also, Mike is a part time Orange County Sheriff. So far, Mike is right about the cat.

Take care, oh, don't forget about the jacket...

Considering the price we spoke about would my range be enough to cover both? Thanks again....
