New user and wheel question.

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum, but have owned my 99 996 for about a year. I'm trying to attached a few photos of my daily driver with no success. Do I need to house them somewhere and just link to them, or can I upload them to this site?

It has been stock for long enough, so I'm planing a few tasteful upgrades. I really like the new 18" Carrera III wheels on the new 997s. Does anybody know if I'll have any problems replacing my 18" Technology Turbo's with these. The specs for the new Carrera III are as follows:

Front: 8x18 47mm offset
Rear: 10x18 58mm offset

Any feedback would be very helpful as I'm about to pull the trigger on a set of take-offs.

Thanks in advance.

Sweet, thanks for your response. I'm assuming I can't use the new PS2s that are on these take-offs however. They are 235/40/18 and 265/40/18. Is that correct?

Thanks again.

Aloha and welcome to 6 speed. To post pictures upload them to image shack or someother site and then cut and paste to this site or link them. Uploading on 6 speed is difficult.

Sorry I cannot help you on your other questions.

Aloha

You should be able to use the existing tires, especially if you are not lowered. Otherwise, 225X40 and 285X30.

Welcome Norbert

I'm new to the site as well. I bought a set of 18"s recently for my 1999 C2 coupe. But prior to buying the wheels I lowered with a set of PSS9's but bought a set of OEM Carrera Classic's 8 & 10 x18, with 50et & 65et, I am using 225x40, 285x30. They fit great! killer look, I believe this set of wheels came off of a Carrera 4 from new.

Thanks for your response, but I'm concerned that the tires which are stock on the 997 (235/40 & 265/40) have a larger rolling diameter, and thus will possibly offer problems with the Speedo and/or ABS system.

Does anybody actually know the difference in rolling diameter between the following:

225/40/18 vs. 235/40/18
&
265/35/18 vs. 265/40/18

I think if the RD is withing 7%, then it might work for the short term.

Thanks

Norbert

Mark,

Thanks for your response. Your setup is very similar to my current setup, but I have the Technology Turbo alloys in the same size. I'm also using the stock 265/35/18 in the rear. I want to do the PSS9 in the future as funds allow.

Thanks again.

225/40/18 = 25.1 vs. 235/40/18 = 25.4
265/35/18 = 25.3 vs. 265/40/18 = 26.3
PCA recommend 4% you should be good in the front but the rear is 1" bigger, this will screw your ABS.
285.30/18 = 24.7 this one is OK

Thanks for the hard numbers. That is what I figured. I should be able to sell these new PS2s to someone who owns a 997/987.

Thanks again.

Tires work OK

I have a 2000 C4 and have been running PS2's, 235/40/18 fronts and 265/40/18 rears since last spring. So far no problems with ABS, 4 wheel drive or stability control.

Norbert,

I've run that exact same setup - Classic III's with the 997 sized PS2 tires. For six months now on a 99 cab. Absolutley no problems. I wouldn't bother selling the tires. On a positive note, the slightly extra sidewall helps the ride quality.

You know I did the numbers, and actually the rears would be at 3.95% difference from stock. This appears to fall within the 4% difference the PCA recommmends. Am I wrong here? It seems like a good idea to keep the newer PS2s and ditch my SO2As which are almost at the wear limits in the rear.

Thanks

Here is the fugures stock vs your new setup
stock setup:
specification Sidewall Radius Diameter Circumference Revs/Mile Difference
225/40-18 3.5in 12.5in 25.1in 78.8in 804 0.0%
265/35-18 3.7in 12.7in 25.3in 79.5in 797 0.9%

New setup:
specification Sidewall Radius Diameter Circumference Revs/Mile Difference
235/40-18 3.7in 12.7in 25.4in 79.8in 794 0.0%
265/40-18 4.2in 13.2in 26.3in 82.8in 765 3.7%

You should be fine but, this is a better setup.
Specification Sidewall Radius Diameter Circumference Revs/Mile Difference
235/40-18 3.7in 12.7in 25.4in 79.8in 794 0.0%
265/35-18 3.7in 12.7in 25.3in 79.5in 797 -0.4%

Just remember these are ballpark figures if you want exact #'s then you nees tire wall hights and widths since all tire manufacture sizes differently. For example I know that my Pirelli's 285/35/18 are wider than Mich 285/35/18.
