Do suction cups damage the inside of windshield?

I recently recieved an Escort Solo 2 radar detector as a gift. The manual says the suction cups can permanently damage some windshields, including some Porsches. Does anyone know if this is true for 911 C2's? Having no knowledge of this, I used a suction cup holder for my EZ pass, and took it off immediately when I read this. There was no damage, but they are weak little suction cups.

I remember seeing this question asked on another forum and the answer was no. I think there was something about older Porsche windows being coated with something, but the new ones (ours) are not.
