Targa top tinting???
Targa top tinting???
Looking at all of the recent tinting post, I went to tint mine on Saturday. I put "legal" 3M tint (full warranty) on the sides and rear glass (no problems). The shop as an automatic computer cutter for most cars, just not for my Targa glass top. I put 20% on the top and they had to do it twice and it is still not 100% smooth. They said that they would only try 1 more time and if I was not happy they would refund that portion.
My two questions are:
1- Has anyone else had a 996 Targa top tinted, how did it go?
2- They also said that they would not warranty the Targa glass top from cracking? I am at a loss here?
They are a good shop, most higher dealerships use them in the area. Any help/suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks,
Ken

On the "cracking" issue - when I had the windows on our house tinted, they warranted our windows from cracking - apparently double glazed windows can crack when tint is applied. Note that 2 of our windows did crack and we had to have them replace them. Hope that doesn't happen to you . . .

I thought the cracking issue was mostly on double glazed windows due to differential heating, especially in hot, sunny climates. I would think single pane glass would be much less likely to crack, but maybe some other mechanism is responsible?
I would guess that applying a piece of film as large as is necessary for the Targa top, and doing it from underneath would be difficult for the installer (sort of like Michaelangelo painting the Sistine Chapel).
